The United Steelworkers union is supporting NDP legislation to close a loophole in federal anti-scab laws that allows employers to use outside managers as replacement workers during strikes. The gap was exposed during a four-and-a-half-month strike by 25 Rogers technicians in Abbotsford, B.C., where the company brought in managers from other regions to perform bargaining unit work, effectively undermining the intent of the new anti-scab protections.
