Galaxy Digital pledged $5 million to defend Bitcoin against future quantum computing threats. While no quantum computers capable of breaking Bitcoin's cryptography exist yet, the vulnerability lies in Bitcoin's digital signature system (ECDSA), which could theoretically be exploited within 5-40 years. Bitcoin's mining and transaction ledger are protected by SHA-256, but about a third of Bitcoin has exposed public keys. The main challenge is organizational consensus among developers rather than technological, as solutions like BIP-360 and BIP-361 already exist.
